Loma de la Cruz Guide
Reach for the Sky: Loma de la Cruz, Holguín's Iconic Hilltop Guide
Ascend to Loma de la Cruz (Hill of the Cross), Holguín's iconic landmark and a must-visit for panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape. This hilltop, topped with a large wooden cross, offers a breathtaking perspective and a sense of accomplishment after climbing its 458 steps. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, providing a unique vantage point to appreciate the beauty of Holguín. The history of Loma de la Cruz dates back to the Spanish colonial era. In 1790, a Franciscan friar placed a wooden cross on the hilltop, marking it as a sacred site. The tradition of climbing the hill on May 3rd, the Day of the Cross, began soon after and continues to this day. Over the years, the original wooden cross has been replaced several times, but the significance of the site remains unchanged. The steps were added later to make the ascent easier. The primary activity at Loma de la Cruz is, of course, climbing the 458 steps to the top. Take your time and enjoy the views as you ascend. Once at the summit, you'll be rewarded with stunning panoramic vistas of Holguín, the surrounding countryside, and even the coastline on a clear day. There's a small restaurant and bar at the top where you can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink or a light meal. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the hill itself, the restaurant offers typical Cuban fare.
